Known as the goddess of creative arts, music and knowledge, Saraswati is the representation of the flow of consciousness and wisdom. The Vedas are her children and they are known to chant to her the song "Saraswati Vandana". She is the daughter of Goddess Durga and Lord Shiva, with influence that endows human beings the power of learning, wisdom and speech. Get to know the Mother of Vedas intimately by reading on.
In order to appreciate her, you have to envision first what she looks like and the following are details of the goddess features. She has four hands, which represent the human personalities or aspects such as ego, alertness, intellect and mind.
In her paintings, she usually holds a book considered to be the sacred Vedas. This represents true, eternal, divine and universal knowledge. She would also have a mala on her other hand which is a rosary made of crystals. This represents spirituality and the power one could get from meditation.
She also holds a pot filled with sacred water that symbolizes purification and creative powers.
Her musical instrument called the veena shows her perfection and mastery of all sciences and arts.
This goddess is sometimes associated with the "anuraga" or passion for the rhythm given by music. This means that hers and our feelings and emotions can be expressed through music or speech.
These many attributes is the reason why Hindus believed that those born with her name can be very blessed in their work and studies.
Saraswati is sometimes seen on a river, riding either a peacock or a swan, and this implies her being the goddess of the river. She rides a peacock because it symbolizes pride and arrogance as the animal is indeed beautiful. However, she mounts the peacock - not to inspire people to be arrogant and be full of pride, but rather to disregard external appearance and always be wise about eternal truth.
A sacred bird called the hamsa would often sit beside her feet.
There is one story going on that says, when offered water and milk, the hamsa bird will only drink the milk, since the milk is good for the body and therefore better than water. This means also that one should know how to discriminate between good and bad or the evanescent and the eternal.
Due to Saraswati's connection to the bird, she is also called a Hamsavahini, which means someone who uses the hamsa as a vehicle.
Saraswati is sometimes pictured as dressed in pure white as she mounts a white swan. This symbolizes Sattwa Guna or discrimination and purity.
She is also a popular figure in Buddhism, as the consort of Bodhisattva Manjushri. As part of an old tradition, only the educated ones worship her, asking for wisdom and knowledge. Students who have important tests often pray to her for guidance.

Oshun, Goddess of Love and Healing, and The Rivers of Ashe
Oshun is known in Santeria (religion of West African) and in Yoruba (religion of Southwestern Nigeria) as the Goddess of love. She is revered in Western Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States for her beauty and grace. Others describe her to be the ultimate feminine essence equivalent to Venus.
Oshun's beauty is not just skin deep. She is the Orisha (diety) of unconditional love and is called upon for family matters and relationship issues. She resides in all rivers and lakes and is said to be the Orisha of sexuality. However, Oshun also resides in the rivers of energy that flows through our bodies. These rivers are called meridians.
Although the Chinese are credited for discovering the invisible energy channels that flow throughout the body and the world, the Africans were also very much aware of the power of chi. Unlike the Chinese, they called this energy "ashe" and the meridians that this energy flowed through were called "rivers."
Today, meridians and energy fields are studied by holistic health Practioners and are used in the common practice known as acupuncture. However, the concept of treating the root of an illness as oppose to its symptoms is universal. Ancient healers understood the power of ashe, and could see beyond the skin, sinew, and muscle tissues of an ailing patient. They understood that disharmony in the meridian channels caused illness. They worked to treat the sick by reasserting an energetic balance within the meridian system.
They understood that old, rusty, tired bones were a result of ashe being blocked in certain areas of the body. They understood that wounds that were slow to heal meant that the body wasn't giving off the proper electronic shock needed for healing. They understood, that ashe much like chi, prana, and mena was an organic life force that flowed from the air into the lungs, into the excretory system, and back into nature.
Oshun is the Orisha who is commonly called on by healers because she presides over the rivers of ashe that allow our bodies to operate at optimum levels. She is the Orisha of unconditional love, because she understands that healing is a holistic approach and study. Oshun understands that all facets of the body must work together harmonically. A healer cannot just treat one aspect of a patient and ignore another.
Traditional healers understand that all parts of our body work together interdependently. Knowledge needs to be transferred through the channels to ensure that each entity receives the ashe needed for balance and efficiency.
