Witchcraft - Wicca, Spells and magic
A brief description of Wicca:
When you practice witchcraft as a religion, it is called by the name for Old English witch, Wicca.
Wicca is a useful term as it is used to combat all the negative stereotypes that society has given to witchcraft.
Wicca is primarily a religion that worships nature, and sees all creation as sacred. In fact, all Wiccan holy days follow the cycles of nature and changing seasons.
Wicca also worships both a male and female deity, a goddess of women and a God of men who between them created the world and everything in it.
Witchcraft is neither black nor white. Witchcraft is a religion that respects Mother Nature and it is neither completely positive or completely negative, this is the same for witches.
Spells are used by Wiccans, and are a series of rituals and prayers that are conducted in witchcraft to ask for divine help in a certain aspect of life.
All spells must adhere to the code of conduct of witchcraft, which means that any spells used to harm another person is prohibited. In witchcraft, spells also can be modified and adapted to suit a Wiccan's personality or specific wishes to cast the spell.
What exactly is witchcraft, spells and magic?
Twenty years ago, I asked those same questions, and I'm still learning the answers. My journey began at age 15, with a very understanding mother and a visit to a "New Age Shop."
I remember entering the shop with a sense of awe, and yet instantly felt at home. However, despite all the potions, oils and books that filled the place, the only thing that stood out to me most was the man behind of the counter. He was not a sinister, mystical figure, but more like George Clooney would be in a Halloween fairy tales, and that was my first lesson. Witches are like everyone else.
Of course, it is possible that the occasional witch who looks more like fiction than fact, but are average Jane's and Joe's, who tend to choose to blend into their environment.
Why? Not everyone is armed with 21st century thinking, and in some cases, witches are still put into the same category as Satanists, pagans, and generally bad people.
Witches refer to spells and magic as God's help, which is not to be confused with magic tricks, like those that you would see in a show - a magician sawing a woman in half, card tricks, etc.
Magic and its practice, however, is sacred to all Wiccans. And its ultimate use is to bring out the best in oneself and in the world, in general.
