spells cast in harry potter
in harry potter series, why do wizards/witches have to use wands when they can cast spells w/out it?

we've seen dumbledore,snape,prof.mad-eye and, to my great surprise, hermione cast some spells w/out using their wands. are wands some kind of enhancing tool to make their spells more effective/powerful?

Because that's how Rowling wanted it, I suppose! (There's also the fact that having a character almost totally dependent on a wand means you can add in all kinds of fun plot twists or throw the characters into gripping situations. Wands did end up being pretty freekin' important in the series, after all.)

But, looking at how the spells are cast and how the wands are used, there are several reasons we can assume wands are widely used.

Think of it liking painting: sure, you can paint something using just your fingers and paint, but when you have a brush, you are capable of so much more control.
I think having a wand helps to concentrate the flow of magic, control it's levels, and direct the magic.
