There are a lot of epic fantasy series out there. But very few have stood the test of time. This book is one of the best books in the genre of fantasy modern epic is the first book in a series called the Riftwar Cycle. If you are looking for an epic fantasy series, to investigate this is a perfect starting point.
The setting and scene of the novel
The setting is medieval fantasy complete with castles, humans, dwarves, elves and all sorts of wonderful creatures. It would seem at first glance standard fantasy fare, but there is a nice twist in this world magicians can open portals called cracks between worlds and it is through one of these divisions to pass an invading army. And this is where our story begins with two young men called Pug and Tomas in the beginning of an invasion of their world called Midkemia. Pug is struggling with the challenge and mystery of becoming a magician and this is where the book's title is taken from.
About the story: just a damn good story and in no time at all they're going to be absorbed into the story and characters. What more could you want? This is not your typical pulp fiction. Very well written and very satisfying. I do not mean much, but there is adventure, travel, magic, introspection, questions, battles, and even a castle site. If you give this book 30 pages you will be hooked.
About the Magic: The title of book (Magician: Apprentice) is almost a warning bell for me because I read a lot of fantasy where magicians and wizards cast all kinds of balls fire, spells, and what does not - and tends to be an easy way for the writer emerged from a difficult spot - only create a new spell that gets you out of trouble! Not so in this book, magic is thin and makes perfect sense. It's just a job well done in this regard.
Reverence to Dwarves and Elves: This book is before Lord of the Rings, so these races of creatures were not the household names they are today. Feist presents them to us in the way they should be presented as mysterious creatures and wonderful to be admired. It was evident that expresses this fear and you feel it.
Actually only half of the book: This book is actually only half of what Feist wrote for his first book. It was a great book for the publisher broke it into two halves. The first half is Magician: Apprentice and the second half is Magician: Master. So if you decide to get this book, I highly recommend you also get the second. You will want to start immediately because the first book that comes to a climax but still much remains to be resolved. You need a second book of this.

If you are looking for a great story to sink your teeth into this is perfect. Well written and a lot books that are out so you do not have to wait to the next. And more to come. Book 3 of the saga Darkwa is scheduled for launch in March 2009 and Book 1 of his new series (the saga DemonWar) is scheduled for launch in 2009.
