Magic the Gathering - Duel of the Planes Walkers For Xbox 360

By Ross D Taylor

Magic The Gathering

Magic the Gathering is as big as it ever has been in the world of collectible card games. The game that started the medium has been adapted for play on the Xbox 360 and attempts to capture some of the best elements of the game including battles, spell strategies, and deck building. The game performs well for the most part, but does fall short in some areas as well.

Magic the Gathering is based on the idea that players, known as "Planes Walkers" are powerful wizards with the ability to summon creatures and cast powerful spells in duels against their opponents. The spells are made available to the player depending on which cards they have available in their hand, some of which can only be played during phases of their own turn, and some which can be played to interrupt or enhance spells during other player's turns.

The Xbox 360 version of the game is beautifully animated and the cards are very readable with the text and artwork of the cards in excellent clarity. Just like in the real game, some cards are more rare than others, and you can earn these cards by winning levels in the campaign. At this time there are 2 add-ons to the game, so there are plenty of decks and campaign levels to keep you busy for a while.

Online play is a lot of fun and can be very competitive. To have any kind of a chance in the online play, you must beef up your deck from playing in the campaigns. This can take a while, but is well worth it. The decks are varied and demonstrate the power of the different types of spells really well.

The problem with online play is there are plenty of glitches which will make gameplay very annoying. Sometimes a card might get played but the result doesn't come through. On several occasions I've had the "cancel" spell just not register and the attempted cancel spell goes through anyway. Other times the game lags and never catches up, leaving players no way out but to quit the game. This can be annoying if you've just spent 25 minutes in furious battle with 3 other players only to see no end to the fight.

All in all, Duel of the Planes Walkers is a great game and can be purchased on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 points.

IMO planeswalkers will be seen as a speedbump in the grand scheme of Magic: The Gathering. honestly, are they going to print any more of these after Lorwyn? will there be planeswalkers popping up throughout future sets? probably not. more than likely, they will turn Standard upside down for a year or two and then fade into obscurity. while i applaud MTG's attempts to keep the game fresh and new, ...
