Here is a truly wicked Halloween theme party to invite your friends to - a fancy dress witch and warlock party.
Set the scene by turning the area of you party into a "magic cave". Drape the furniture in black sheets (this will also help protect your furniture) and creating an altar - with a Book of Shadows and some magical decorations. You can get these items from a new age shop near you, or make your own. Cover old books in parchment paper covered with odd symbols and use a luminaire globe as a magical crystal ball.
One way to make a book of shadows is to cover a large book with black paper. Open the book and keep it flat. (Do not do this with a book you want to keep!) Glue all the pages together, except the two where the book is open. Glue two sheets of paper printed with spells on them (you can print spells out the Internet) on the open pages open
You can also paint the leaves with white acrylic paint and stick on pictures of unicorns and other mythical creatures, when dry.
Prop the book on the altar - you can use a book rest or rest against it a candle in a bottle. Add black candle, a pack of tarot cards and some crystals.
If you have the magic dragon themed statues and ornaments, put them out, or cut paper dragons and mythical creatures and pin them to walls
To add an haunting effect to your cave, drape old white sheets or pieces of gauze on helium balloons. The paint fearful faces on them and let them float to the ceiling. You can also put a mask and wig onto helium balloons and let them loose.
Decorate the corners of the room, arches and doorways with fake spider webs. You can buy fake cobwebs that spray put or a stick on at Halloween supply shops.
Use a black laundry tub with a handle as a cauldron, and fill it with a lemon drink or party punch and float weird animals (carefully) like plastic toy rats, toads, lizards in the punch. These make great party favor for guests.
You can set the tub (your cauldron) on a pile of crumpled red and yellow cellophane to represent a burning fire.
Fill cups or champagne glasses (you can paint the plastic champagne glassed with a water-based silver paint) with strings of glass beads in bright colors, antique jewelry and gold chains. Scatter small crystals and jewel bright pasta mixed with Gummi eyes around the bases of the cups. These props also look great set in a table of food.
You can make simple magic wands using foot long pieces of dowel rod, or even long sticks. Paint black wands with gold tips. But if you really want impress guests, take a quick trip to the country and gather straight pieces of fallen branches to make the wands.
As the head witch or wizard, you can create a great costume that does not cost too much. Make a magic hat from a large sheet of construction paper curved cone-shaped. Trim the bottom of the cone to fit your head, tape the ends securely in place and paint it black. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle the hat with glitter dust and let dry. You can also cover this hat with cutout gold and silver stars and crescents.
Make a simple dress. Use black satin, 60 inches by 120 inches. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, and cut an opening at the crease at the top of the material. Cut a shallow neckline to fit your neck. You can hem the edges to make it look clean. Sew the sides of the gown to 16-20 inches from the armpit (to adjust its size). Close the edges of the neck in front of the tunic with a paste brooch in a magical design of a pentacle.
Now invite all the witches and sorcerers you know to this great Halloween theme party!
