The Angeles book is good but a bit too happy in its interpretations. This one is more real, less fluff.

I bought this copy again for nostalgia. I had it when I first got my first Thoth deck. I was 18. It was a long time ago. There were no other books short of AC, which I read but that is a huge undertaking. The Tarot cannot be grasped in isolation. You need Qabalah and Astrology to really “get it”. The Mirror of the Soul is good if you want to skip all of that. But then what is the point?! After I got it again, the only reason I didn’t send it back because it was only $10. I figured shipping would cost more than a $10 credit is worth. Compared to the Banzhaf (Keywords for the Crowley deck) and Duquette (Understanding the Crowley deck), it is wholly unnecessary. For those who want to do more than divination, or want to do divination on solid ground, read Duquette, read the Book of Thoth and Equinox (AC). Bhanzaf is a very useful little book to accompany simple readings while you integrate the cards into your mind-spirit. Duquette prepares you for AC. And only He can take you farther.

It appears the author either never read any of Crowley’s writing, or simply chooses to ignore it. He fails to mention the Hebrew Alaphabet correspondences in the Major Arcana. This is inexcuseable as they are clearly present on each trump. His treatment of Kabbalah and Rosicrucianism is practically non existent. In my reading the symbolism of the back of the cards in not even examined. Furthermore his descriptions are all slanted toward fortune telling, not from my understanding what Crowley was about. His description of The Emperor’s legs as forming the number 4 is flat wrong. It is rather the Alchemical symbol of Sulfur the male element, in contrast to the Empress’ forming of the symbol for Earth the female component. You will do much better reading Crowley’s Book of Thoth, DuQuette’s Thoth guide,or Banzhaf’s Keywords book. If you are a serious student of Theurgy don’t waste your resources on this childish effort.

What a few of the reviewers have said is true: every single interpretation Ziegler has for any of the cards is exceedingly positive. Even cards with names like Sorrow, Failure, Cruelty and Futility have interpretations which will make you glad to have them pop up in your readings (“Hey, Cruelty! Hoooray!”).

That said, as it’s true regarding every single book on the tarot, this is Ziegler’s particular interpretation of the cards. As you use them in your daily readings, they’ll gain a life of their own through the patterns you observe when you contrast the meaning you or other people atrribute to them to the events in your life and your evaluation of these events. Ziegler’s interpretation of the cards isn’t incorrect. I just doubt that it’ll be even remotely similar to yours. Life can be joyous as often as it can be unrelentingly grim. Sometimes you just can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, even if there is a light.

Sincerely, with all due respect to Ziegler, you can find much superior material just surfing by the Internet. And I do mean MUCH superior. Do a little googling and you’ll be surprised with what you’ll find. If you bought the US Games Thoth deck, the booklet that accompanies it far surpasses what this book has to say.
