I bought this set at a local book store which had little slection of such. I choose it because the description stated that it was “clearly and simply presented”, and this was to be my first Tarot set. But I didn’t find it very helpful in learning much about Tarot reading as it spoke more of mythology and the designs on the card than the actual meanings they were to represent.

I also was not expecting the images on the cards to depict such a dark nature as the description suggested this was an alternative to the “occult” pursuit on the subject, and that it “sweeps the medieval dust off the Tarot and brings it into the twentieth century”. Though they were said to represent both positive and negative, this darkness gave the cards a more negative feeling than the positive one. I was looking for something a bit more positive as my intensions are on using this skill for helping people and dark images tend to make seekers uncomfortable (no matter what the meaning).

To top it off it was a very poorly made product, I found the cards to be VERY flimsy and thin. The complete cover of the book fell off the first time I read the book and the binding was clearly separating. I returned the book and felt the price was way to high for such a cheaply made product.

If it were a better made product it may be fine for someone interested in mythology or someone a bit more knowledgeable about Tarot reading. I do not feel this was a very well thought out product as the description implied it was perfect for a layperson and the packaging implicated it was for “beginners”.

The only slight positive about this product was the cloth as it had Celtic Cross spread imprinted which made it easy for a first time user, but I also feel this may limit new users to exploring the many other layouts accessible to them.

I purchased this tarot for a friend who was interetsed in getting started in reading. I had the Hanson-Roberts and she liked the quality of the illustrations, and the Mythic Tarot seemed to have beautiful cards as well. Conversely to the Hanson-Roberts, the Mythic Tarot cards are all interconnected; there are recurring figures within a suit and recognizable characters from Greek mythology, most in keeping with the conventional interpretations of the cards, although a few deviate from anything I have learned.

All in all, it is a gorgeous deck that was very carefully constructed and which I think lends itself to deep meditation and further study. And the way the cards relate to each other could certainly be helpful for those learning by enabling them to make connections within the suits.

I purchased the plain hardcover set in 1986 and I’ve used it regularly ever since. For the novice it’s a super set. The only bad part is the cloth that came with the set. It is very cheesy – It is pure polyester! However, the book is solid and has held up very well through many parties and good times. So have the cards, which are beautifully illustrated and quite mysterious looking. The information is easy to find and interpret in general terms so they can apply to whomever you are doing a reading. All in all it’s a fun little set for giggles at parties. I’ve used it many times through the years as part of my Halloween costumes. It’s a great purchase.

I’d always been interested in tarot reading but had never until I bought this book. It explained the history of the cards and the meaning of them well with much detail. Very easy to understand and apply to your own life immediately. Beautiful deck.
